Montreal Steak Seasoning (v2)
This is my second version of a homemade Montreal-type steak seasoning. It is an amalgamation of several online recipes, using only the ingredients they mostly have in common, and in the most common proportions. I may try adding one part paprika and/or one part mustard seed, as some recipes do, in future experiments.
When the peppercorns are freshly crushed, they, in combination with the crushed red pepper, make the mix almost to spicy for me, but not for my husband.
- 2 parts black peppercorns
- 2 parts coarse kosher salt
- 1 part dried minced garlic
- 1 part dried minced onion
- 1 part dill seed
- 1 part coriander seed
- 1/2 part crushed red pepper
Place all spices in a plastic bag and crush with a meat pounder (or other suitable kitchen object, like a rolling pin). Shake to mix and store in an airtight container.
