picture of Ms. Wilkins Your Spanish Teacher

Name: Melissa Mae Bowen Wilkins

Certifications: K-12 French & K-12 Spanish

Experience: 14 years teaching in the Wake County School System at the middle and elementary levels. The 2007-2008 school year is my first in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System. I have taught French, Spanish, computers/technology, and have conducted numerous worskhops for teachers on the use of technology in the classroom.

Honors: North Carolina Teaching Fellow; Rand Road Elementary Teacher of the Year for 2003-2004

Methods: I teach my students learn how to take responsibility for their own learning, how to set learning goals, and how to achieve them. This is a skill that they can use for the rest of their lives! I am continually striving to meet the various learning styles and learning needs of all of my students, providing many different ways for them to take in new information, to process it, to play and practice with it, and to demonstrate mastery of it. Above all, I want my students to experience the fun and the joy of learning in my classroom, and to know they are loved, accepted, and respected.

Likes: Learning languages and the histories of languages, learning about other peoples, cultures, and religions, animals (I would have been a veterinarian had I not chosen to become a teacher), photography, hiking/camping, boating (i.e. kayaking, canoeing), computers, crafts (especially those of times past), woodworking, science and nature, learning how things work (I do many of my own car repairs, for example), gardening/landscaping, cultural anthropology, etc. etc. etc. My problem is that there are few things I *don't* like, and I have a hard time fitting all of my interests into my life!

The future:
  • My studies toward a Masters degree in Education with a concentration on Curriculum and Instruction are temporarily on hold, while I build a home in Pilot Mountain, NC next to my parents and spend more time with my parents, which is why I relocated to this area. In a few years, I hope to resume my Masters degree studies. In the meantime, I am always learning!
  • I would like to pursue National Board Certification when the certification, which has been discontinued for elementary-level Spanish teachers, becomes available again!
