Teaching the Names of the Countries

With this activity, students will learn the names of the continents in the second language as well as approximate locations/where to find it on a typical (for us) map of theworld.

I find it best to pull down the map of the world. Point and name each continent with students practicing the words. Then, have them to stand up and face the map. The teacher faces the map, (Get close, so they associate the actions with the locations of the continent.) and says the continents with these actions:

  • left hand, upper cut -- North America
  • left hand, under cut -- South America
  • right hand, left upper punch -- Europe
  • right hand, right upper punch -- Asia
  • right hand, under cut -- Africa
  • SLAP right knee coming up for Australia
  • Jump (on both feet) -- Antarctica

Teaching the Names of the Oceans with the Oceans Dance

Preliminary Activity: Look in a social studies book.
Using two fingers together, trace the shape/pattern of the oceans.

Dance: Say the names of the oceans with the actions (Give it some musical rhythm.):

  • Atlantic -- hands start high and move down in a "S" curve
  • Pacific -- split in 2 on our maps -- so both hands out doing window washing circles
  • Arctic -- it's cold up there -- so both hands are up high, fingers forming the American Sign Language signs for W and S (This is the ASL sign for Winter), shivering
  • Indian -- Down and to the right on the map -- so right hand down low, just above the hip, making a window washing circle.
